The Whitewater Canal Scenic Byway was created to share the many stories of the canal era and beyond. The ribbon that ties this all together would be the Whitewater Canal. The Whitewater Canal having been an economic driver for generations. The Canal started in the beginning being a transportation hub for farmers far and wide connecting them to the world. Soon after the railroad took over the tow path leaving the waterway behind. But soon after the canal found new life in hydro power. Powering flower mills, sawmills, and many more things needed to expand the whitewater valley. Nearly two hundred years later it is still operating as an economic driver as people from all over the world visit to see the remains of the era gone bye. The whitewater canal still has approximately sixty percent of its necessary structures as they were many years gone by.
The Whitewater Canal Scenic Byway was founded in 2006. But a few years prior a small group of people began building on the idea to showcase the canal era. Starting in the beginning nearly two hundred years ago to today where it is still a driving force in the Whitewater Valley. The scenic byway was established as these people worked to find and discover the history of this small waterway. Starting in Lawrenceburg working north as far as Cambridge City, soon followed by a section that went on north to Hagerstown. On the southern end a spur that went from the area of Lawrenceburg to Cincinnati. Much of the remains of the Whitewater Canal still remains today, for visitors to take a step back in time to experience all the aspects of time.
The Whitewater Canal Scenic Byway is made up of one hundred percent volunteers. The good news is we have a dedicated group of people who work tirelessly when available to make this all possible. We are always looking for more people to share this passion with other like-minded people to make this continue to happen. Weather you would love to learn the history and have the opportunity to learn and share at the same time. Our Visitors Pavillion is a good start. Located in Metamora, IN you can share your knowledge as you learn it a few short hours a month, or every other month. We also have maintenance opportunities as well in our campground. It never hurts to try the shoe on to see if it fits. This is a very easy task as all you have to do is drop us an email to bywayinfo@whitewatercanalbyway.org
